The DFG priority programme SPP 1879 is a research consortium studying bacterial second messenger signaling that currently funds 18 research projects at German universities and other research institutions. By including representatives of all clades of the bacterial kingdom and a wide interdisciplinary spectrum of state-of-the-art methodologies, the research programme of SPP 1879 represents the first systematic and comprehensive strategy to understand all fundamental aspects of nucleotide second messenger signaling in bacteria.

Besides funding research directly, SPP 1879 promotes knowledge exchange and cooperation by organizing international symposia and smaller scientific meetings as well as the exchange of project coworkers. It promotes gender equality by providing special support for young and female researchers.

SPP 1879 is currently in its first funding period (September 2016 – August 2019), which will be followed by another 3-year funding period.
